Nottingham University Television Station, commonly referred to as NUTS, is the student television station of the University of Nottingham. It is funded by the University of Nottingham Students' Union and constitutes one of the Union's 9 Student-Run Services. It is the first international student television station due to there being a NUTS located on their China campus.[1]

2008-2009
Although NUTS first existed in 2005, it was only in 2008 that it truly emerged. Located in D3 (a 3x4m office) and under the direction of Station Manager Anna Campbell, NUTS was recognised as a media-SRS within the university, along with URN and Impact. As NUTS was a new organisation, it often worked in conjunction with URN, such as in the Summer Party 2009 coverage. During this time, there were only 13 members, three editing suites and two cameras.
2009-2010
After NUTS' first year as an independent SRS, it began to take a larger approach to student life at the university. This year, led by Station Manager Bossoro Ngo, NUTS had its first coverage of Week One, the SU elections and its first live broadcast of the Varsity Ice Hockey match. Also, for the first time, new shows were created and distributed on the website. The number of members increased to 125, causing NUTS to look for a bigger office/studio space.
On 28 April 2010, NUTS China was launched as a joint effort by Bossoro Ngo and the team at the Ningbo Campus, led by the Station Manager of NUTS China, Cai Yuting. This process made NUTS the first international SRS. NUTS China produces content in China, which is then forwarded onto the UK and uploaded onto its website.[2]
2010-2011
Now led by Station Manager Michael Perry, NUTS began experimenting with more live broadcasts. Week One had a live 30 minute broadcast every night from Monday - Saturday, Student Union Council began being broadcast live for the first time, the NUS Delegates debate and results were shown live, 'SU Elecitons Result Night was able to be broadcast live (although this is also due to the fact that voting became electronic this year, making it much quicker to count the votes) and Campus Cupids became the first non-'major coverage' show to be broadcast live. Content from each of the channels rapidly expanded, with 14 shows created over the channels by the end of the year.
The Station Manager for this year is Robert Leventhall. Due to the grand scale NUTS began to undertake, it became obvious that the station needed to expand itself into a more manageable position. Constitutional changes from the previous year were implemented and a new executive structure was determined for this academic year. This removed the position of Deputy Station Manager and Marketing Officer, which were replaced with the introduction of the Technical Director, General Secretary, Director of Content, Training Officer and Publicity & Events Officer. (Training Officer was a position previously, but was removed from the 2010/11 exec.)
NUTS has also taken its biggest challenge to date, in organising its first reality show, The Hall. The show consisted of over 50 hours of continuously streaming live broadcast, the longest ever continuous broadcast by NUTS. The show took place over the weekend of 14-16 October 2011.
NUTS will also host the NaSTA 2012 Conference & Award ceremony, on 20-22 April 2012.
The NUTS office/studio is located in room C41 in the Portland building of the University of Nottingham. The studio is used for recorded segments, as well as the majority of live productions.
Almost all aspects of the station are run by the members of the NUTS executive committee, with four of the channels having their own head. Each show's producer has a certain degree of control with regards to their productions, but must be agreed to by the Director of Content.

At the start of every semester, NUTS members are asked to forward ideas for shows they wish to produce. As well as this, as of 2010, all of the channels have their 'major coverages' of the year, each of which have a Coverage Producer (not nessecairily the Head of Channel) chosen by the NUTS Executive Committee - Entertainment hosts Notts Got Talent, Culture hosts Summer Party, News hosts the SU Elections, and Sport hosts the Charity Varsity Series. Week One is classified under Entertainment, but as it is held at the start of the year before the first week of studies, it is produced by the Station Manager and/or the Director of Content.
The NUTS website also holds a section called China, exhibiting videos produced by NUTS China. In the UK, these are broadcast under a collective banner, even though they can be split into the previously mentioned categories. China is the only channel without a Head, as it is controlled by the Station Manager of NUTS China.
All shows are listed with their producer(s).

NUTS first affiliated itself with the National Student Television Association in the 2007/2008 year. In this year, NUTS earned its first recognition, with a 'Highly Commended' for Best Documentary.
At the 2010 awards ceremony hosted by GUST, NUTS earned their second accolade with Open Mic receiving a Highly Commended in the 'Open' category.[3]
At the 2011 awards ceremony, hosted by LSUTV, NUTS continued on their success from last year. Highly Commended were awarded to Best Drama (The Art of Deduction),[4] Best Station Marketing [5] and Best On-Screen Male (Lawrence Bolton).[6] Harriet Brampton was the winner of Best On-Screen Female,[7] earning NUTS their first NaSTA Award in the process. The then-station manager, Michael Perry, was also elected to NaSTA Chair. At the NaSTA 2011 AGM, NUTS won the right to host the 2012 NaSTA conference, beating out competition from SUSUtv and LA1:TV (known at the time as LUTube).
